The MWNF Virtual Museum – a unique tool to prepare for the toursBrussels, July 2009In cooperation with partners from 14 countries MWNF has set up the www.discoverislamicart.org Virtual Museum, the largest museum on the Internet. 40 museums have contributed to create this unique presentation of Islamic art by virtually interrelating artefacts from their collections with Islamic monuments and sites around the Mediterranean. The Virtual Museum's Permanent Collection displays 850 museum artefacts and 385 monuments and archaeological sites from the period between the Umayyad Caliphate (622) and the end of the Ottoman Empire (1922). A Database equipped with an open search facility offers searching according to personalised criteria. Descriptions written by local scholars are available in Arabic, English, French and Spanish. A cycle of 18 Virtual Exhibitions is dedicated to the great Islamic Dynasties in the Mediterranean. Each Exhibition displays items – museum artefacts, monuments and archaeological sites – from different countries according to a concept devised jointly by curators from South and North of the Mediterranean, and presents history, art and culture from this shared perspective. Access to all sections of the Virtual Museum is free. |
