About The Tour

"He who has not seen Cairo has not seen the magnitude of Islam, for she is the capital of the world, the garden of the Universe, the assembly of nations, the beginnings of the Earth, the origin of Man, the iwan of Islam and the seat of Kingship. "That is how the famous Arab historian Ibn Khaldun described Cairo in the 14th century. This tour offers a broad view of the art that flourished in Egypt during the Mamluk Era. The Mamluks, a dynasty of former slave-soldiers who rose to power in the mid-13th century, inflicted a major defeat on the Crusader reigns and stopped the Mongols' advance towards Palestine and Egypt. Under Mamluk patronage, Islamic art reached its peak. Artists and craftsmen from all the parts of the Muslim territories escaped from the Mongol invasion and converged in Egypt, where their different skills blended and created new artistic and architectural models, while strong commercial and political involvement exposed artistic models to various foreign influences.
